Match the laser line to your fluorophore’s excitation curve, not just to a quoted maximum. How much an offset costs depends on the shape and width of that curve.
Power stability and amplitude noise decide how reproducible your numbers are, so specify them with the conditions they hold under.
Use less power than you expect. The ceiling usually comes from saturation, photobleaching and the sample, not from the laser.
M² measures how far a beam departs from the ideal Gaussian through its beam parameter product. Good TEM00 modules sit around 1.1 to 1.3.
In an otherwise identical setup, focus diameter scales with M² and peak intensity with the inverse of its square.
If you focus tightly or couple into single mode fiber, beam quality deserves as much attention as output power.
Output power is the number everyone compares. Beam quality decides how much of that power you can concentrate where you need it. Within the same optical setup, a module with a clean beam can deliver higher intensity at the focus than a nominally stronger one with a poor beam.
What TEM00 describes
TEM00 is the fundamental transverse mode of a laser cavity. Its intensity profile is close to Gaussian: brightest in the centre, falling off smoothly, with no side lobes. The ideal fundamental Gaussian achieves the smallest possible beam parameter product, which is why it is the reference against which other beams are measured.
Higher order modes put energy into rings, lobes and dark nodes. They carry power but concentrate it less well, so for the same optical power and the same optics you end up with a larger spot and a lower peak intensity.
TEM00 is not the same as single mode. TEM00 describes the spatial profile. Single longitudinal mode describes the spectrum. A beam can be clean and round while being spectrally broad, and the reverse is also possible. See laser linewidth and coherence length for the spectral side.
M² and what the number costs you
M², spoken “M squared” and also called the beam propagation ratio, is the ratio of a real beam’s divergence-diameter product to that of an ideal Gaussian at the same wavelength. For a standards-compliant measurement, beam widths are determined from second moments, the D4σ definition.
Note what M² does and does not tell you. It characterises how the beam propagates and focuses. It does not describe the full intensity profile, so two beams with the same M² can still look different and behave differently in a given system.

*Same optical power, same wavelength, same optics, Gaussian-like beams. Intensity falls with the square of the spot diameter, so peak intensity scales with 1/M²².
Focus size: the practical consequence
For a Gaussian-like beam with a consistent diameter definition, the smallest reachable spot follows from wavelength, focusing optics and M²:
d ≈ M² · 4λf / (πD)
λ = wavelength · f = focal length · D = beam diameter at the lens, 1/e²
State the axis you mean. Diode beams are often elliptical and the two axes differ.
Three levers, and M² multiplies all of them. A higher M² does not make a small focus impossible, since wavelength, numerical aperture and input beam size all enter as well, but within one setup it makes the spot proportionally larger. You cannot recover that with downstream optics, because the beam parameter product travels with the beam.
Raman and fluorescence microscopy. Spot size sets excitation density and, in confocal systems, resolution. Whether TEM00 is required depends on the architecture, but a well focusable beam is usually what you want.
Flow cytometry. The beam is shaped into a defined profile across the flow stream. What matters is a reproducible illumination profile per cell, which a structured beam makes harder.
Interferometry and holography. A clean wavefront is part of the measurement, and higher order content shows up as fringe distortion.
Alignment and machine vision. Spot roundness and pointing stability often matter more than absolute power.
A single mode fiber guides only its fundamental mode. How much of your beam enters that mode is set by the overlap between the incoming field and the guided fiber mode, in amplitude and in phase. Mode field diameter, focusing optics, alignment and wavefront quality all enter.
M² alone does not give you a coupling figure
A low M² is a necessary condition for efficient single mode coupling, not a sufficient one. Two beams with identical M² can couple very differently depending on the kind of wavefront distortion they carry, and the guided fiber mode is itself only approximately Gaussian.
Treat any percentage you see, including ours, as an example for one specific beam, fiber and launch arrangement. For your own build, the number has to be measured.
Power that does not enter the guided mode is not simply converted to heat at the input face. Depending on the arrangement it is reflected, scattered, or radiated into cladding and free space modes, and where it finally ends up depends on the fiber, the coating and the mount. In a packaged assembly a good part of it does eventually become heat, which is why launch design matters at higher powers.
Multimode fiber is more forgiving, at the cost of the clean output profile that made fiber attractive in the first place.

What to look for
Spatial beam mode
TEM00 stated explicitly. If it is absent, ask rather than assume.
M²
A number with the measurement method, ideally second moment based. “Near diffraction limited” is not a specification.
Beam diameter
Note whether it is 1/e² or FWHM. For an ideal Gaussian the ratio is about 1.7; for non-Gaussian profiles that fixed factor does not hold.
Divergence
Full angle or half angle, a factor of two apart.
Ellipticity
Diode beams are often elliptical unless circularised. Relevant whenever you need a round spot.
Pointing stability
In µrad per kelvin, with the conditions it was measured under.
Mixing definitions is a common source of specification error. Before comparing two suppliers, check that both quote the same beam width convention and the same angle convention, otherwise you are comparing numbers that differ by factors of 1.7 or 2 for no physical reason.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good M² value?
For a TEM00 diode module, 1.1 to 1.3 is normal and good. Below 1.1 approaches the physical limit. Above 2 the beam is meaningfully multimode and focusing suffers correspondingly.
Can beam quality be improved after the laser?
Only by discarding power. A spatial filter or a single mode fiber cleans the profile by rejecting the higher order content rather than converting it. Losses of 50 % and more are normal. Starting with a better beam is usually cheaper.
Is TEM00 the same as single mode?
No. TEM00 refers to the transverse, spatial mode. Single longitudinal mode refers to the spectrum. A laser can be one without the other, and datasheets are not always careful about the distinction.
Why is my diode beam elliptical?
Because the emitting facet is rectangular, so divergence differs between the two axes. Circularisation optics in the module correct it. If a round spot matters, check that the module includes them.
More power or better beam quality?
For peak intensity at the focus the two trade against each other symmetrically: halving M² and quadrupling power both give roughly a factor of four, since intensity scales with P/M²². Beam quality becomes the better lever when more power is impractical, when the sample cannot take it, or when you need single mode fiber coupling, where additional power in higher order content does not help at all.
A worked example: a 50 mW module with M² = 1.2 beats a 200 mW module on peak intensity only once the latter exceeds roughly M² = 2.4. For many multimode diodes that is easily the case, but it is a calculation rather than a slogan.
Need a defined spot size at a defined working distance?
Tell us the spot you need and the optics you have. We will work back to the beam parameters the module has to meet, and say which of them need measuring on your setup.
Linewidth is the spectral width of the emission. Coherence length is how far the light stays correlated with itself. Narrower line means longer coherence.
The conversion between them depends on lineshape and on which definition of coherence length you use. Always state the convention.
Most applications need far less than the narrowest source on the market. Buy the linewidth your measurement uses.
Raman signal rises steeply towards shorter wavelengths. Fluorescence usually does too. The right excitation sits where that trade works out for your sample.
Common starting points: 532 nm for many inorganics, 785 nm for many organics, 1064 nm when fluorescence dominates. Verify on your own material.
For ordinary dispersive Raman, spectrometer resolution, not laser linewidth, sets what you can resolve.
